Two hundred years ago there was a young professor at Durmstrang Institute named Dmitri Tarasov. Brilliant, good looking, popular with students and faculty Dmitri was headed for greatness. Until the night he went out into the forest to collect samples of nightblooming herbs for demonstration in his classoom and was found the next night dead.

That's where the story should have ended: short and bitter. But three nights after Dmitri was buried he climbed out of his grave and was reborn a vampire. He made the mistake of attempting to return to his friends and family... he carries the scars to this day.

Since then Dmitri has lived all over the world, studying many different forms of magic from anyone who would teach him. His areas of expertise are Astronomy and History. For the first 50 years of his unlife he worked odd jobs, mostly for Muggles who accepted him better than Wizards because Muggles just simply don't believe in vampires. Eventually he found the work wholly unfulfilling and walked into a Wizarding school in Montreal and applied for a position as an Astronomy professor. He was extremely surprised to get the position and taught happily for twenty years before a student discovered his secret and his parents demanded his immediate removal. He's taught in two other schools only to face the same sort of situation.

Dmitri is quiet, reflective, thoughtful and by necessity a solitary person. Cultured, well-read, world traveller - he has seen almost everything the world has to offer. He suffers from a bit of ennui as a result.

Forty years ago, give or take, he saved a wizard named Eldred Worple from being some other vampires' dinner. Worple wasn't particularly gifted, but he was entertaining and could tell a decent dirty joke. Dmitri allowed Eldred to follow him about and introduced him to other vampires. This led Eldred to write a book about him titled 'Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires'. Eldred was the one to give Dmitri the nickname 'Sanguini'. It started as a joke between two friends and quickly transformed into a whole persona, not entirely unlike Dracula. (Though Sanguini finds the comparison to Vlad extremely annoying for reasons he declines to go into)

Dmitri returned to England when he heard his old friend was dying. Worple was the one to suggest to Dmitri that he apply to teach at Hogwarts - a school Dmitri had only even seen once before many years prior at a party given by Horace Slughorn.

Dmitri is tall, lanky and thin from always being underfed. He is soft spoken with a faint trace of his Russian accent. He has dark, long hair that can most often be found flopping around in his eyes. He isn't traditionally handsome, but in his opinion he cleans up rather nicely.
